In just a few weeks time I will be slipping on a wet suit and starting the first leg of the Alpe d’Huez triathlon. This is a gruelling swim, cycle and run event held in the French Alps, with a brutal 1000m cycle ascent of the Alpe d’Huez pass (notorious as a stage of the Tour de France) as its centrepiece. Why I am putting myself through this? Partly through a masochistic streak, but mainly to raise money for Parkinson’s UK and to raise awareness of the disorder. I had a very enjoyable trip to Glasgow yesterday, talking to a group of Parkinson’s UK supporters about how we are using genetics to understand Parkinson’s disease, and develop new drugs for the disorder. As always, some excellent probing questions from the audience.
